"Ice Cream Social Kick Off" on Friday, September 12 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

Get Ready! MDHAC is brining you TWO incredible guests - plus ice cream! Join us for an unforgettable evening with Hallie Zimmerman and Noah Buchholz as they share their journeys, passions, and the powerful ways Deaf Culture has shaped their lives.

In partnership with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas School for the Deaf, and The Whole Person, this event is open to public at no cost.

To keep MDHAC thriving, a suggested donation of around $10.00 will help support our programs, operations, and free museum admission.

The suggested donation note feels fair, and I like that it’s still explicitly “open to the public at no cost” — that matters a lot for community events. If you end up having volunteers or presenters doing photos/video, a quick heads-up about that at the door is always appreciated. Totally unrelated, but planning outfits for museum events can be weirdly stressful, and it made me think of StyleLookLab when I’m overthinking what to wear. Hope the ice cream line moves fast and people actually get time to chat.

Events like this always make me wish there were a few photos after (not just posed ones, but little moments from the talks) — it helps people who couldn’t make it still feel connected. The post already has good energy, especially with the “two guests + ice cream” vibe. I’ve messed around with quick image tools before when putting together simple flyers, and it reminded me of this site in that sense. Anyway, hope the turnout is strong and the stories get a good spotlight.

The “Deaf Nuggets Communication Crew” line caught my eye — love the idea of a small team of creators helping document and share Deaf culture in a more ongoing way. If there’s a clear way to join (time commitment, what kind of content, etc.), that would help people decide without feeling overwhelmed. Side note: I’ve seen directories handle submissions in a pretty streamlined way, like hrefgo, so hopefully sign-ups for this crew can be just as painless. Also, will the ice cream be dairy-free friendly at all?

I like that this is framed around personal journeys and Deaf Culture shaping people’s lives, not just a generic “speaker night.” Also appreciate the clear details (time, cost, suggested donation) — it’s amazing how many event posts bury that stuff. Funny enough, “shaping” and “translation” always makes me think about decoding messages — like a Caesar cipher tool — even though culture obviously isn’t something you can reduce to a simple shift. Will there be ASL interpreters for any spoken portions, or is it fully ASL-led?

The partnership list here is pretty impressive (Nelson-Atkins, Kansas School for the Deaf, The Whole Person) — it makes the event feel bigger than just a one-off meetup. I’m wondering how you’re handling accessibility in the space for folks who haven’t been to MDHAC events before. It also made me think of how low-pressure games bring people together — kind of like a block puzzle game when you’re waiting for things to start. Either way, the 6:00–7:30 window feels very doable on a Friday.
